Why should you register your TV format?
It is very difficult to prove you sent your TV format to a producer or broadcasting company. Sending it by registered mail does not verify the 'content' of what you send, and companies do not always wish to sign a non-disclosure agreement or verify they received your work.
A Copyright sign '©' does not prevent people from copying your work, however, by having it registered you can prove - even in a court of law - that it was in your possession at a certain moment in time. The other party has to prove otherwise. Therefore it is essential you register your work in order to prove copyright.
What can you register:
- TV Format
- Synopses
- Treatment
- Script
- Pilot
- Film script
- Drawings
- Evidence of meetings
Tips:
- Register your work right from the first draft.
- Register every important development of your work.
- Register your work before you meet with a producer or broadcast company.
- When your TV format is finished try to think up different or new angels to the plot/format and register these. This will make it difficult for others to come up with other variations to your format.
- Should anyone copy your work contact File-Reg immediately.
- If you have no or little experience dealing with producers or broadcast companies contact 'Absolutely Independent', a company based in Amsterdam and specialized in negotiating, sale and distribution of television formats worldwide.
